I’ve been making sound works since the early 1990s, building labyrinthine compositions from layers of recordings I gather and transform. I’ve released albums, collaborated on film scores, and appeared on many broadcasts, mostly under the name of my solo and collaborative project, RNL.

Nested

Label: Vonconflon
Format: Limited edition cassette, Digital download
Country: Germany
Released: 2025
Link: Bandcamp

I compiled and released this collection on my label, Vonconflon. Nested features new works by artists exploring traces of the natural, the human, and the handmade within the synthetic. They are the insects and mice who have burrowed inside an ancient TV cabinet, tasting its circuits and wires. RNL contributes the track “Pourer and Solution,” alongside works by Tomutonttu, Rimarimba, Günter Schlienz, and others.

Berlin Now and Never

Label: Staaltape, Anagram Space
Format: Limited edition cassette with handmade collage
Country: Germany
Released: 2025
Link: Anagram Space

RNL leads off this compilation with two tracks, “Anxiety Engine” and “Anxiety Inhibitor.” This collaboration between Staaltape and Anagram Space features four Berlin-based artists in a cassette that’s completely wrapped in collage. The edition was limited to 20 copies. This was a particularly meaningful project for me because Staaltape released some of the very first experimental recordings I ever heard when I was a young teenager.

“Anxiety Engine” and “Anxiety Inhibitor”

Project type: Sound to accompany an art installation by Brian Zegeer
Location:  Gallery 114, Portland, OR, USA
Date: 2024
Link: Soundcloud

RNL created two sound pieces to accompany Brian Zegeer’s installation, Anxiety Engine and Inhibitor, for a closing event in the exhibition Hyphae. These pieces grew out of material we were developing for another collaboration, which is currently still unfinished. I’m very eager to return to it.

The Living Things

Label: Cosmic Winnetou
Format: Limited edition cassette, Digital download
Country: Germany
Released: 2024

Life emerges, expands, mutates, breaks down.
It consumes, spawns, swells, and reaches out.
It tests, tries, and simply holds its space.

RNL released this full-length album on the Cosmic Winnetou label out of Stuttgart. The source material was recorded between 1990 and 2023 in Boston, Istanbul, Estoi, Herculaneum, Brandenburg, New York, and Berlin.

“Beacon”

Project type: Sound work and interview
Location:  USA/Online
Date: 2024
Link: Bait/Switch

RNL created this piece for Bait/Switch Vol. 4 No. 2 in response to a creative prompt. It later found its place as the starting track on the album The Living Things. The interview and photos give a glimpse behind the scenes into RNL’s working methods.

Original Score: Contact, a Film by Joe Nanashe

Project type: Film score
Location: Germany, USA
Date: 2020
Link:

RNL created six pieces based on transformations of field recordings for this film by artist Joe Nanashe. Contact appropriates utopian and dystopian imagery from popular culture alongside scenes from public city spaces and the artist’s personal life, in an attempt to understand and contextualize the COVID-19 crisis in New York City.

“Multi-Falsing”

Project type: Sound work and interview
Location:  USA, online
Date: 2020
Link: Bait/Switch

I created this piece for Bait/Switch Vol. 1 No. 2, in response to a creative prompt. The interview gives additional insight to my working methods.

“Looking back at these tapes—not only were they recorded through the air, on a boombox microphone held up to the earpiece of the phone, but also, I was doing sound on sound to layer them. It’s a superimposition—that space that I was in, my bedroom, and it’s late at night, and the air is there sort of multiple times.” “There was a very strong emotional quality to those original recordings. You just hear the sound of people not knowing.”

Conquering King Kong

Label: Vonconflon
Format: Limited edition cassette, Digital download
Country: Germany
Released: 2019
Link: Bandcamp

Conquering King Kong traces a path through mental states and thought patterns, an abstract audio film that unspools with the logic of a dream. From years of tape archives, I wove together sound spaces and objects from field recordings, found sounds, private performances, and endless analog and digital manipulation.

CEPH
HOWWHATWHY

Label: Self-released
Format: Digital download
Country: Germany
Released: 2014
Link: Bandcamp

CEPH was a collaboration with artist Jörg Simon. We met in Frankfurt and felt a strong affinity for each other’s work, especially in our mutual use of collage. For this project, we applied that mindset to sound. We worked on it in Frankfurt, Istanbul, and Berlin. Jörg did the cover for this one. The album was mastered by A Very Big Cat in Istanbul.
